Moon Area High School senior Cameron Goble is just one of three student athletes at Moon that holds the rare honor of being a three-sport varsity letter winner.

Goble shines on the baseball diamond, on the basketball court, as well as out on the golf course.

For the Tigers, Goble plays shortstop and pitches and has been doing this as long as he can remember. “As soon as I could pick up a baseball, so probably three or four,” said Goble.

His high school baseball career will be ending this spring, but it will not mark the end of the road for Goble and baseball.  The senior has committed to continue playing the sport at the collegiate level for Virginia Commonwealth University.

Goble’s reason for getting started in all three sports is really quite simple, not being bored.

“Growing up, playing all those sports with my dad in the back yard, and all that stuff, it’s just something that I didn’t want to be without,” said Goble.

The senior also stated how his want to play sports helps him get through the long days at school.

As for the most difficult part about playing three different sports, Goble said that it is not relying too much upon one sport.

“I think there was times where I got in the mindset where if it’s basketball season or if it’s baseball season, you just have to practice this one sport,” said Goble.

He said that this mentality would cause him to be rusty in the other sports. “I think getting that balance, even when it’s the off-season, is important,” said Goble

However, Goble’s favorite part of being a three-sport athlete is the people that he has met.  With three different teams and three different rosters, Goble has had plenty of teammates.

“Having a different season of the school year be with a bunch of different guys and having that relationship,” said Goble.

Out of the three sports, Goble did not hesitate to say which was his favorite: “Definitely baseball, baseball is my favorite, that’s what I’ll be doing in college.”

Since baseball is Goble’s favorite, it may be surprising to others to see him involved in two other sports, especially today where specialization of one sport is the norm.  However, Goble says that wisdom passed down to him from his summer baseball coaches, as well as his father, who was a three-sport athlete himself,  keep him involved in three sports.

“I think preaching the aspect of athleticism. I think you need that for every single sport. When you try to get too technical and specialize in one certain area, I think you get too robotic,” said Goble. “Staying athletic and putting your body in different situations to move differently helps with each sport, even if you aren’t specifically training on that sport.”

As for his favorite memory of his athletic career thus far, Goble recounted the numerous good teams that he has played for.  The senior eluded to last season for the Moon basketball team. A season in which the Tigers went 27-2 overall, en route to the Class 5A State Championship.

However, for Goble, while this was one of his favorite moments, the top slot goes out to all of the people that he has met throughout his baseball career. The senior said that ever since he was a little kid, those in the baseball community have been welcoming towards him.
