When this school year reaches its end, Moon Area High School senior Logan Young will finish a chapter in his athletic career.

The senior is a star on the court, diamond and gridiron, allowing him to earn a varsity letter in baseball, basketball and football.

With this high of a pedigree, it is unsurprising that as one chapter ends another immediately begins. Young will further his athletic career as he has committed to playing college football at Carnegie Mellon University.

Young will finish off his high school athletic career on the baseball field this spring. Ironically, the sport he will be finishing his high school career with is the sport that started his athletic career.

“Baseball was just the first sport I’ve played. [I’ve] played ever since T-ball [when I] was five years old,” said Young.

For both basketball and football, Young would not begin his journey with those sports until a little bit later in life.

The hoop life started for Young around the time he was in third grade.  The senior just finished off his basketball career at Moon earlier this month when the Tigers edged Eden Christian Acadamy for a 57-54 victory.

As for the sport that Young will continue playing at the collegiate level, Young did not hit the gridiron until the 7th grade.

Despite starting at different stages in life Young says that he likes the sports equally.

However, his favorite sporting moment comes from the gridiron. “My best memory was probably winning the section championship this year in football,” said Young.

Young helped lead the Tigers to a record of 9-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play en route to the section championship and a playoff birth.

The key for Young is his drive to compete.

“I’m a very competitive person, and I just love to compete in everything, and sports is a way to do that,” said Young.

The biggest challenge for Young is the ongoing balancing act that is school and sports. This task is made even more difficult due to the fact that playing three sports in three different seasons all but eliminates time off from sports.

“The most difficult part was like managing it all and managing school work at the same time,” said Young.

The three-sport star continued to state that at times the task of balancing work and school gets a little bit stressful.

The constant change from one sport to another is a challenge that Young says he enjoys. However, he says that the never-ending changes make him feel like he is always falling behind.

As for time off, this is something that does not happen for a three-sport star like Young.  He says that training is something that is a year-long obligation.

His constant hard work and training have put him in special company at Moon.  According to Athletic Director Ron Ledbetter, Moon has just two other athletes that hold the same title of three-sport letter winners. This achievement is something that Ledbetter says is rare in this day and age.

Young will have the opportunity to end his high school career on the same field as one of the other three-sport letter winners. Senior Cameron Goble can be seen out on the diamond alongside Young this upcoming spring.
